Tax credits aim to help individuals pay for college education
Individuals who have filed their 2011 taxes early in an attempt to defray education costs may be wondering, “where’s my return?”
For starters, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has reported that millions of dollars worth of tax refunds have not been delivered due to mailing address errors. Some taxpayers who have not updated their residential location are experiencing a delay in their return, which has prompted the IRS to remind citizens to update their records. According to World News Insight, approximately million worth of tax refunds in Georgia were undeliverable because of mailing address issues.
Individuals can ensure a speedier refund – and no residence confusion – if they sign up for a direct deposit into their bank accounts. But for those who prefer to mail in their forms, the news provider said that it will take up to four weeks to receive refund checks. Taxpayers can check the status of their payment by visiting IRS.gov, clicking on “Where’s my refund?” and entering some information, such as your social security number, filing status and the exact dollar amount of your refund.
Individuals who claim college tuition and student loan interest on their returns may also have to wait another month before they file their federal taxes, according to CBS News Money Watch. Due to new laws that Congress did not pass until late last year, the IRS said it will not accept certain returns until mid-February at the earliest. The news provider reports that taxpayers who claim expenses for college education are included in the group of filers who have to wait.
However, the good news is that many scholars who are paying for college credits – whether through student loans or tuition payments – are eligible for a tax break this year. According to Bloomberg, the American Opportunity Credit will provide up to ,500 in deductions for filers who are paying for higher education. To qualify, students must be attending a college or university at least half-time. The credit can be used through the first four years of school.
According to the IRS’ website, the tax credit – which is included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act – covers materials for course materials, as well. Thus, students or parents who shelled out money for books last year can claim those expenses.
The credit is limited to individuals who have a modified adjusted income of ,000 or less, and married couples who earn 0,000 or less. Taxpayers who earn more are not eligible for the deduction.

Question by Michelle: Anyone file early with TurboTax & haven’t gotten their refund yet? Is something wrong?
Ok, so, the Where’s My Refund doesn’t give me an exact direct deposit date, just says that they have received my return and it is being processed and I should receive it by February 1st, but Turbo Tax says I should have it today.
When I e-filed, I opted to have University Bank take the fees out of my refund, and I received an email from them with this message :::
Thank you for selecting University National Bank to process your income tax refund.
University National Bank has not received your IRS refund this week as expected.
We expected to receive your IRS refund on 01/28/2011. Since we only receive IRS deposits
once a week, the next opportunity for us to receive your refund is one week past the
expected funding date shown above. We will not have any additional information until that
time.
The Where’s My Refund Tool still says the same thing as of 2pm here in South Carolina. So, does this mean I will not receive my refund until February 4th? Next Friday? Is there something wrong?
I e-filed January 16th, 2011, got accepted January 18th, 2011! If Turbo Tax says my return has been accepted and there’s nothing else I need to do, why is IRS saying it’s in processing??

IRS wins.
If there is no date on the IRS site, it’s not done yet. If they haven’t sent it to the RAL bank, there is no way the RAL bank is going to send you a refund of money they haven’t gotten yet.
Your bank understands this even though Turbotax doesn’t.

People keep their words where you come from you dipshit??? Republicans ran on their word about slashing the budget and now you want them to go back on their word to those that voted for them!!!!!
I am beginning to hate the IRS!!! I was supposed to receive my DD today and still nothing, I guess all we can do is play the waiting game.
I filed with turbo tax and was accepted on the 15th I paid my fees upfront and I still haven’t got my refund yet. I called the IRS and they said it will most likely be next Friday. Don’t understand what is going on but it has to do with the slow processing of the IRS computers It doesn’t matter who you filed with the IRS is just behing this year
I got the same message. Though it won’t let you respond to the email, I did use the site to contact them through their “contact us” Link.
I was wondering how they would know? The IRS where’s my refund site says I’ll get it by February 1st! I wrote the customer service the following letter:
“Hi! I received an email saying the IRS did not deposit my refund today, as scheduled. If this day is not over, then why am i getting an email as if the day is over and I won’t receive a refund until 7 days later? The IRS phone number and website says I should receive the refund before February 1st, 2011..though I know they deposit on Fridays…how do you guys know they won’t deposit the refund before the day is over? It is only 2:32 pm Friday January 28th, my time! Please respond! Thanks in Advance.”
The day isn’t over. Geez…no one does anything right these days…no one ever does anything on time. That’s why the United States is behind all of the other countries now. We procrastinate, put everything off, and have no compassion. No one cares for anyone else. Grrr…yeah, I’m pissed…I was going to get a car.
Yeah, how about we just decide to be late on our taxes. Complete B.S.! Ruined my day, for sure.
